What is ABR and what does it mean to a buyer?

An Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR®) designation is the benchmark of excellence in buyer representation. This designation can only be achieved by meeting certain education and experience criteria, upon which it is awarded by the Real Estate Buyers Agent Council (REBAC) – founded over 20 years ago to promote superior buyer representation skills and services.

One of the first steps in the home buying process is finding the right agent to represent you as a purchaser. At first glance, it can be hard to differentiate between the Realtors under consideration. When you are working with an agent that has been awarded an ABR designation, that is an indication that not only have they met the practical experience requirements, but that they have studied the policies, standards of care, and risk management related to agency relationships, conflicts and disclosures. The requisite coursework for the ABR designation also includes skill-building in negotiating and purchase contracts.

As contracts have evolved and real estate transactions in general have become more complex, buyer representation has become more prevalent and critical than ever. Realtors who hold an Accredited Buyer Representative designation have proof of their proficiency at servicing the special needs of purchasers.
